'Home thoughts from abroad' is a poem learned by most children at school and no doubt Browning was looking at the English weather with rose coloured spectacles. This last week of typical April weather with strong showers and sunshine was to the fore, when a group of European representatives for livestock markets gathered for their annual conference in Stourport on Severn.
Representatives from most European countries were represented at the event and part of the itinerary was a trip to the farms and estates of South Shropshire to see typical farming in this part of the world.
The group braved an April day of wind and showers on their first visit to Ms. A.E. Williams & Son, Folly Bank, Newcastle on Clun, where a typical upland farm was looked at by the large contingent of foreign representatives and their wives. Some 80 plus people attended the visit, where suckler cows and pedigree sheep were shown to the party by Roger Williams and his son Anthony.
The second visit of the day was to the Earl of Plymouth Estates, Bromfield, where not only the farming was viewed, but also the gravel workings and diversification projects involving conversion of farm buildings into craft workshops.
The trip as far as Shropshire was concerned, finished at Ludlow Livestock market, where delegates looked at the premises and discussed the role of auctioneers in the future.

General consensus is that this last budget was a typical pre-election budget where the Chancellor attempts to show the nation what a good job both he and the Government are doing. This is of course a matter of opinion. What is a matter of fact however is that Mr Brown has tried to address the problem of the first time buyer - albeit many consider he could have done considerably more. Read more...
