Brecon Market Society Show and Sale of Lleyn Sheep

Thu 13 September 2018

A quality entry of registered Lleyn Sheep attracted a large contingent of buyers to Brecon who were keen to purchase breeding stock. As a result, records were broken for the Brecon Sale as we saw shearling ewes reach £270 for the prize-winning pen from Ms HM Wells, Glanen, while the 2nd prize pen of ewes from Mr & Mrs E & L Thomas, Foxhole Farm, made £205 and vendors enjoyed a 100% clearance and an incredible average of £158 with a premium for all the best types.

The ewe lambs enjoyed a selective trade with strong prices for the best types, however, we did miss to sell some. The top price was a £152 and £132 for lambs from an established breeder DA O’Brien, Beech Tree, while a well-known local breeder Mr & Mrs C Price sold lambs at £110 and £105. The ewe lambs averaged £94 with a 50% clearance.

Records were also broken in the ram section with a 70% clearance and a top price of £788 for a tremendous yearling ram again from Ms HM Wells, whilst Mr AE Davies from Pwllheli sold a wonderful ram for £777. The overall average was £378 which would be well up on last year and demand was certainly encouraging from both commercial and established breeders.

We thank not only the Lleyn Society but also the breeders for supporting this special show and sale with some exceptional stock and the strong demand for breeding stock certainly confirms the confidence in Lleyn Sheep as a breed.
