Typically a difficult time of year with people being on holiday and the trade being a little slower, McCartneys had some 595 lots on offer with a particularly good clearance from near Newtown providing some lovely interesting and super quality items.

Pictures of all qualities and styles seemed to dominate the evening with six R Greenhalf prints depicting birds realising £120, an oil on canvas laid on board of a bearded gentleman £340, a half length portrait reputed to be the music tutor to Charles II £720 and an oil after Francia, Bologna portrait of Evangelista Scappi £1,600.

As has become expected from the Portcullis saleroom, furniture performed well with a set of six goncalo alves almost certainly Gillows chairs although unmarked realised £400, a 17th Century oak chest £300, a George III oak dresser base £1,300, a lovely 18th Century oak lowboy £200 and a pair of Carolean style armchairs £240.

As always silver sold well with all manner of interesting items selling above market value, four Georgian silver spoons £90, a cylindrical mug £80, an art nouveau card case £80, a table snuff box £120 and a double ended vesta case £90.

Interesting objets d’art generated much pre sale interest with a carved root skull tobacco jar realising £100, a pair of grotesque mask bronze mounted ivory plaques £100 and two white metal mounted Ellesmere Beauty horses hooves £80.

McCartneys next sale is Thursday 17th September at 3pm with viewing Wednesday 16th September 9am-7pm and Thursday 17th September 9am-3pm.
