House Price Growth

Mon 20 October 2014

When recently scanning one of the trade journals I came across an article headed: ‘Average Home to cost £780,000 by 2040’, whilst more than a little surprised by the prediction I thought I would find out how much prices have risen over the last 25 years.

Data is available online from a variety of sources, but one particular graph I came across from the Nationwide Building Society shows graphically the overall theme with average house prices in 1990 of around £60,000 compared to today’s average house price at £188,000,  showing an increase of over 300%, and all this despite a massive tumble in prices during the recession years.

So perhaps at first glance the predictions of the article looked quite ridiculous, but should the trend of history match the trend of the future it could just be right – who knows.

One thing is for certain, investment in property is as ‘safe as houses’.
