North Herefordshire/Powys Border Standing Straw Report

Thu 19 July 2018

McCartneys report a very strong standing straw trade over the 1175 acres of standing straw within north Herefordshire and the Powys border, which they have offered on behalf of clients through the beginning of July.

These straw sales were attended by a large number of potential purchasers, wanting to buy standing straw for animal bedding and feeding, for the forthcoming winter.

The straw trade is considerably up on last year, due to the long hard winter of 2017/2018, where most farmers were forced to use most of their straw stocks.

Gareth Wall of McCartneys, Kington who conducted a number of straw sales on behalf of clients, said "there was an excellent interest in all straw offered and farmers were out in force to secure standing straw, to fill their buildings for next winter."

McCartneys in Kington report the following straw prices:

Winter wheat straw averaged £109/acre up to £132/acre

Winter barley averaged £127/acre up to £140/acre

Winter oats average £94/acre up to £105/acre

Winter oil seed rape averaged £42/acre up to £50/acre

Spring barley averaged £77/acre up to £80/acre

Rye grass averaged £87/acre up to £90/acre
