The Portcullis Auction Room

Thu 12 March 2020

One thing we can always say is that the auction room in Ludlow constantly provides us with surprises.

2019 was a fantastic trading year for the auction room with larger entries received along with an increase in visitors on auction days and of course using the “on-line” bidding platforms.

There is no doubt that the way people purchase items these days is changing, with improvements in technology more and more people are finding it easier to purchase from home. It has to be said there is much merit in actually seeing & touching what you wish to bid on and that philosophy will probably not change.

Typically, the first auction in the new year leaves you feeling rather despondant, with not many looking to buy and sell, however even though there was only 350 lots for auction in January of this year there was a larger crowd in the room than we normally see and a superb trade on each section sold. We had many lots selling to figures well in excess of expectations and some very happy vendors.

Lot 425 sold in December 2019 (pictured above) - 20th Century Chinese School - Fish in a pool. Signed characters and seal marked watercolour (18.5" x 24") sold for well in excess of expectations for £2,550.

Our spring time auctions are looking good with lots of house clearance items in the pipeline as well as more items from the estate of the late Islwyn Watkins, which will be present at next week's auction on Thursday 19th March.

Please note that all of our auctions here now commence at 12 noon and for more information please contact Lauren Hall (Office Manager) or Daniel Fielder (Expert Valuer) on 01584 878822.
