Brecon Show Potential Sale Report - Saturday 14th February 2015

Mon 16 February 2015

This year's show brought forward one of the best entries in terms of quality for several years. 99 cattle were entered with 85 forward on the day and attracted buyers from all parts of the U.K.

No-one was disappointed by the exceptional cattle on offer, of which most came from farmers within an 8 mile radius of Brecon market.

The day started with the show which was judged by Chris and Nigel Pennie form the SARKLEY herd.

In the un-haltered classes the honours went to MAC, a Limousin steer lot 83 which was bred by DG Lewis, Cefncoed Mawr and later sold for £2,100 to Lucy Jones, Devon.

In the haltered section there were 12 classes which were split into sex and age, and one of the youngest entries STRAWBERRY SPLIT bred and shown by JAV Mills & Sons, Llanerchllwyd, which was a exceptional roan coloured heifer (main picture above) and one to be seen again, purchased by Mr Brian Jones, Pentregwyn for £3,100.

The overall reserve champion was a lim cross steer (pictured above) bred and exhibited by PJ & TA Jones, Tyisaf who are regular winners at this event, it was later sold for £2,200 to SJ Layton, Knoakes court.

There was a marked premium for all the cattle on offer however this was justified by the quality on offer. The top price on the day was a very correct young limousin cross heifer bred and shown by CM & WC Phillips, The Batch which was purchased by CJ Brooke from Worcester for an amazing £4050, while the steers topped at £2,750 for a charolais cross calf from JM Lewis, Pentwyn which was keenly bid on and eventually purchased by that famous show team MJ & JA Pidsely from Devon.

There was also a wonderful pen of cattle from DH Morgan, Nantgwynne who sold a Heifer at £2,850 and another for £2,700 with a steer at £1,600.

The 85 cattle forward enjoyed a virtual 100% clearance with steers averaging an impressive £1434 per head for calves averaging 7 months of age while the heifers averaged a staggering £1723 per head.
